Globalisation: why is it an issue now?
Recent years have seen violent anti-globalisation protests of a kind not seen since the anti-war movements of the 1960s and '70s. The WTO protests in Seattle and WEF in Melbourne, and most recently those in Genoa, have seen arrests, destruction and a death. However, globalisation began with Marco Polo's spice trade and has usually been seen as a good thing - what has changed at the end ot the 20th century?
