Political decay

By Evaggelos Vallianatos - posted Tuesday, 17 January 2012

The Republican contenders for the presidency have spoken aloud about an America representing not liberty and democracy but authoritarianism, a class society promoting ruthless exploitation of the natural world and gross inequality at home - and empire.

Such a prospect is dangerous. It should become a wake-up call to president Obama to return to the humane, inclusive, ecological and democratic message of 2008 that brought him to power.

Yes, Obama made terrible errors in these past three years. His bailing out Wall Street rather than Main Street and the perpetuation of war as well as other George W. Bush policies were bad and disappointed millions of Americans.

But Obama can regain his reputation by standing up and fighting for a decent America, a country that, once again, stands by the rule of law and democracy. This means ending all wars immediately and using the savings for public works; taxing the rich to close the revolutionary gap between the millionaires and everybody else; enforce the anti-trust law to bring to human size those corporation "too large to fail"; employ the power of the government to protect public health and the natural world; negotiate the abolition of nuclear weapons; shut down Guatanamo; support family organic farming; phase out pesticides and abolish the genetic engineering of food; and get serious about global warming by launching a huge support of solar energy, electric cars and public transport.

With such programs certain to create millions of jobs, most Americans will join Obama to save their country from the Republicans and their Roman ambition.

The world has had it with biological impoverishment, greed and violence. Time has come to rebuild our democracy and lead the world to a less violent future, one that guarantees that we work not against each other and against the earth.
