In the long term it is all so futile. Politicians know that the bulk of the electorate will not care that logging Gippsland will drive what few Powerful Owls remain to extinction. Modern man does not need species few have ever heard of - but he does need woodchips.

Conclusion
Later this year there will be highly polished people gathered on the lawns of our government houses. With their newly awarded bits of metal hanging on them, most will be puffed-up with the pride of knowing that the establishment has judged them to be superior people.
Far removed from that salubrious environment will be a man who owns almost nothing. He has sacrificed a profession and parenthood. He did this knowing that there will be no personal gain for the making of that sacrifice either in this world or the next.
How could any person love this land so much?

The activists don’t live in the forest continually, but try to find odd jobs while ready to return to the forest when alerted. The general lack of income and the shifting of habitats in a continual need to find a roof over their heads is a difficult lifestyle.
They claim that the logging industry primarily exists to keep those who live in nearby towns employed, as the woodchip industry earns very few export dollars for this country. Could it be true that we have people destroying 10,000-year old ecosystems just to keep them occupied?

But the citizenry were familiar with what was being fought for. Direct obstructionist methods fail when the mass of the public cannot relate to what they have not experienced.
