With friends like Warren Mundine and the ALP ...

By Megan Davis - posted Thursday, 1 December 2005

NSW ALP Secretary Mark Arbib has supported Mundine saying the ALP accepts a diversity of views. Hello? So diverse as to permit the next president of your party to write and advocate conservative policy? So diverse that such a role is at odds with the end goal, to defeat the irrepressible John Howard? Y’know, the same John Howard who was so utterly condemned by the masses of ALP and trade union people at the industrial relations protests? I never truly understood what people meant by the genius of Howard’s political skills - I do now - the ALP is consistently outwitted and outplayed.

Thank God, the ALP has a penchant for losing federal elections. One can only imagine what policy ideas await Indigenous Australia if the ALP ever got elected federally with Mundine at the helm.

And that’s the remarkable genius of John Howard - he uses the imprimatur of the ALP, the natural party of Indigenous Australia, to spruik his wares. I write a column criticising the ALP instead of the government. And at the next election Aboriginal people (presumably now socially acceptable with mortgages and a seven-day working week, first world health conditions and unquestioning faith in the word of politicians) won’t vote for the ALP because of advertisements on their plasma televisions each night about the inevitability of rising interest rates under the ALP.
