I suppose he could not say that Mr Murdoch allowed a culture to develop which led to the UK wire tapping scandal; an abuse of liberty and the rights of the ordinary members of the population that, for sure, indicates that public interest is entitled to some influence over the press, particularly the gutter press, even if it is after the event.
Mr. Abbott concluded his speech, which received hearty applause from the crowd, by saying:
This is a night to renew our commitment, to renew our faith. In 100 years time all of us will be gone but, please God, not the ideals and the great causes for which we stand. May it be said of us that we have passed the torch of freedom to our successors -- which we do by supporting an organisation that's bigger than any of us and that can outlive all.

I wonder what organisation is bigger than all of us and what benefits such an organisation could bring if it is not based on social justice and clear thinking.
Obviously the causes which I prefer, social justice, the Common Good and an education which teaches children how to look for and evaluate evidence, is not part of the agenda of neo-liberals or the Institute of Public Affairs.
