More specifically her research involves the critical examination of professional and non-profit sport organisation functioning. Michelle's PhD research explored how gendered workplace practices in Australian National and state sport organisations implicated men's and women's career trajectories.

Her research has been widely published in domestic and international peer reviewed journals including Community Development, International Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation, International Journal of Sport Management, Recreation and Tourism, International Journal of Revenue Management, International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing and addresses issues relevant to sport, gender and diversity related issues, sport organisation community and societal impacts, sport marketing and social media communications, fandom and sport financial sustainability. Further and more recently, Michelle has applied her research interests in domestic and international hospitality and tourism contexts.
