Brumby's big spend: dirty water deals don’t come cheap

By Bernard Eddy - posted Tuesday, 11 August 2009

As Australia comes to grips with the challenges presented by climate change, the time has come to underline Australia’s vulnerability as the continent most susceptible to its effects - the driest inhabited continent on the planet facing the axis issue of changing weather patterns: exacerbated by water scarcity.

The Brumby Government has walked right into a trap. By recklessly inflating public perception of the cost of recycled water to save its own political hide, Brumby has set Victorians up by signing the biggest and the most questionable deal in Australia’s history for a water desalination plant. It has set about giving Victorians a false sense of security on water policy.

All the water which could have been recycled and have avoided this gross waste of public funds is now destined to be pumped into an already threatened ocean.

One thing is for sure, water is the game to be in, in these troubled times.
