There is only one moral, ethical approach to climate change

By Fiona Armstrong - posted Thursday, 25 June 2009

Legislating a target is important because then there will be consequences for failing to deliver the cuts that will ensure a safe climate for Victorians. It allows the development of carbon budgets that will outline the share of emissions cuts needed to be made in Victoria achieve a safe level of carbon dioxide in the time frame available. We can then allocate funds to plans and programs and design rules for business and industry that will deliver the required cuts. Part of this will require educating the community about the need for change, and ignoring the claims of major polluters for compensation as we make a rapid transition to a zero emissions economy. They are guaranteeing our extinction by producing a dangerous product. Why allow this to continue?

We have the technology. We must find the resources, and the courage, as a community, to demand our political leaders make a legislative commitment to return our climate to one that is safe to inhabit and will continue to be so.

Accepting our fair share of the responsibility also means starting the clean up in our own backyard. In doing so Victoria will demonstrate leadership to the other states and our national government, and advocate with integrity that they too take strong and swift action.

There is only one moral, ethical approach to climate change. It is the acceptance of responsibility for mitigating the effects of climate change by all states and individuals across the globe. Victoria must do its part, and Victorians must demand that it does so.
