The race to the White House

By Chin Jin - posted Tuesday, 5 February 2008

Are Americans ready to have a female president? I think the opportunity is ripe now.

Are Americans ready to have an African American president? I doubt it, the time is not ripe.

The development of the African Continent is in general lagging behind others, so the background of Africa would not boost Obama's success. The US president is highly regarded as a world leader. Is the world ready for Obama to win the race to the White House and lead the whole world? I think the answer is “no” despite my sincere wish that he could win. I believe the American electorate is simply not ready.

With setbacks in the War on Terror in Iraq, the US economy bogged down, and fatigue after eight years of Republican administration, the November 2008 presidential elections should tip to the Democrats. In spite of great appreciation of African Americans contribution to US prosperity and development, and the emergence of the great leader of American civil rights movement, Martin Luther King and African American political figures holding great power, such as Colin Power and Condoleezza Rice, it is still highly unlikely that the Americans will choose Barack Obama to be the next US president.

One can easily conclude that should Barack Obama win the nomination of his party, he will eventually lose the general election in November 2008 and there will be four more years of Republicans in the White House.
