Convenience of teachers or education of children?

By Des Treacy - posted Wednesday, 4 April 2007

I would suggest that any additional funds, thrown at education for salary or grants for particular purposes, should go to the internal Professional Development Team in each school. That group would be accountable for achieving the goals for which funds were allocated. In the past, there has been tremendous waste, with little accountability.

Salary for Professional Development master teachers should be significantly higher than the normal rate to attract only the very best and to foster excellence; again tenure would depend on peer support. It would be interesting to have this very group, each three years, select the school head teacher.

School administrators could be employed at a far more economical rate than principals. Many now employed as principals perform this job very well and would quickly opt for those positions, even on lower salaries.

We have a federal election coming up soon. Historically there is no more advantageous time to mount a challenge to an incumbent or to an aspiring government’s accountability to the nation than at “trough time”. Listening acuity becomes considerably enhanced.

This education debate is crucial to the future of our country. We can’t go on digging mining holes forever. The system of education delivery in our country needs to change.
