Warnie: my dog ate my homework and mummy said it was OK to take them ...

By Mark Ketas - posted Thursday, 20 February 2003

In a sport such as Cricket which requires a sedentary style of athleticism: run, stop, run, stop, drink beer, smoke, run, stop, etc the use of steroids would not be of much advantage - unless you were trying to recover rapidly from an injury. Cricket is a bit like darts in that respect; except without the sharp projectiles.

Without doubt Warnie is guilty of one thing: stupidity. Either he has taken banned drugs to help him recover or he has taken it with blind faith. In reality he will not get out of it without the minimum of penalties and most assuredly his career is over.

If he does get off it will open the door for every Ben Johnson-type cheat to say: "My mummy made me do it."

His crime is also his punishment. And I have sympathy for him in that regard: Is he smart enough to know how smart he is?
