Reclaiming the past

By Stephen Hagan - posted Wednesday, 1 June 2005

What does that say to us as a society when even our more proactive youngsters can partake in a street rally, which is commendable in itself, and explain the significance of the Indigenous flags but fail the culture test on their ancestry?

To say we are black and beautiful is praiseworthy. To say we are black and proud is also admirable. But what is it that we are proud of?

How can we be proud of being marginalised by mainstream society and find our people dying 20 years before others in our town; when we are the most imprisoned; experience appalling discriminatory practices daily, and have the least access to employment, health, housing and education opportunities?

But in order for our people to feel justifiably proud of our race we must first start with a journey of discovery of our family. We all need to talk more to our parents and their parents and others associated with the family and tribe to start drawing a picture of where we come from. Only when we know where we come from will we know where we are going.

Today is as good a day as any to start to reclaim our past.
