Lost in illusions: the West's struggle for realism in a changing world

By Vince Hooper - posted Wednesday, 19 June 2024

Western governments have struggled to regulate these platforms effectively, resulting in a fragmented approach that fails to address the root causes of digital misinformation and its global impact. Building robust information ecosystems and promoting digital literacy are crucial steps for the West to mitigate the negative effects of social media.

In conclusion, the West's apparent loss of realism is a cause for concern. A return to pragmatic, interest-based policies is essential to navigate the complex challenges of the 21st century. This entails recognizing the limits of power, engaging in strategic diplomacy, and addressing internal vulnerabilities, including climate change, AI development, the transition to EVs, and the challenges posed by social media.

By realigning its strategies to reflect the realities of the modern world, the West can strengthen its position on the global stage and effectively contribute to world stability, prosperity, and peacefulness in the world. The West perhaps needs a Reality Check?
