How healthy is our democracy?

By Andris Heks - posted Friday, 20 May 2022

He loves coal and his government lags behind other developing nations in climate change action.

He has a record of doing too little too late to mitigate the effects of climate change-induced disasters of record droughts, bush fires and floods.

He has dragged his feet on taking action against the abuse of women in Parliament.

He refused to order vaccines early enough to reduce the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on Australia.

He has a history of repeated pork barrelling to gain electoral advantages.

He refuses to support the establishment of an Independent National Crime Commission to scrutinise federal politicians.

He will not contribute to remedying the reduction in real wages by refusing to advocate that wage levels should not be below the level of inflation even for those on minimum wages.

His government's getting caught off-guard about the China-Solomon Islands protection deal is seen as a major national security failure.

Hence the credibility of the claim of the Morrison government as being a reliable economic and national security manager has been substantially reduced.

Yet this has not stopped the Coalition and its dominant ally, the Murdoch media, from going into overdrive to whip up a well-tried last minute scare campaign to discourage voters from choosing the Opposition on the ground that they cannot be trusted for good economic and national security management.

So, how can the voters find out the truth?

Political literacy requires engaging in critical thinking to distinguish between fact and fiction, but most people tend to be vulnerable to political manipulation by self-serving, powerful anti-democratic propagandists.
