I don't especially like the Christmas and New Year season

By Brendan O'Reilly - posted Tuesday, 29 December 2020

The negatives relating to Christmas are so noticeable that you can find many lists of such negatives on the internet.  Here is one such list:

1.     Travel is insane.

2.     Mall parking is mayhem.

3.     Electricity bills skyrocket (Northern Hemisphere).

4.     Christmas movies are the worst.  (My pet hate is "there really is a Santa" movies)

5.     It's marriage breakup and domestic violence season.

6.     Your bank account gets drained.

7.     The holidays pressure you into seeing relatives you'd rather not see.

8.     Buying presents is stressful.

9.     Holiday depression is common.

10.  Christmas is horrible for the environment - so much garbage.

11.  It's all about excessive consumerism.

12.  Christmas music gets old fast (and sounds corny in February).

13.  You have to pretend to like presents you actually hate.

14.  It's exhausting.  Travelling to see family, shopping, cooking, decorating, holiday party after holiday party... It can really take a toll on people.

15.  Christmas season starts way too early.

16.  Office Christmas parties can be really awkward.

17.  If you live in a warm climate, you never get a white Christmas.

18.  If you live in a cold climate, it's too cold.

19.  If your birthday is anywhere near Christmas, you always run the risk of having your presents combined.

20.  Santa isn't real.  Keeping the lie alive is tough enough, but once the truth comes out the jolly old guy becomes creepy.

21.  You can't say you don't like Christmas without being called a Grinch.

New Year has even less going for it:

First of all the timing of New Year's Day is somewhat arbitrary.  In Western countries the adoption of 1 January as New Year's Day is related to the Gregorian and earlier Julian calendars.  I often thought that the day after the December solstice would be a more logical date.

There are many differing New Year's Dayscelebrated at different times across the world.  The best known alternative to 1 January is the Chinese New Year, which is the first day of the lunar calendar and is corrected for the solar every three years. The holiday normally falls between 20 January and 20 February.

Increasingly, New Year's eve has been taken over by drunken yobbos and excessive fireworks.  Let's say that it is not my cup of tea, and I don't go out late that night.  I might also add that I don't have much time either for new year resolutions, which are generally hackneyed and are rarely kept for long.

I suppose I am now going to be called a Grinch!
