Our biggest problem is ignorance

By Reg Little - posted Wednesday, 4 September 2013

I think the results of the toll will fall on the United States and Europe. So it will be Western civilization which is simply moved aside, and is no longer the #1 arbiter and decision-maker (in the world). They (countries in the West) have brought failure to themselves. They, the United States and Europe, are going to become 2nd world, and 3rd world countries."

Clearly, knee-jerk Defence and Foreign Policy responses of following the US, whether in Syria or elsewhere, should be carefully evaluated from these perspectives. Yet these words are almost heresy amongst those in charge of Australia's future.

The ignorance of Australian leadership and relevant government institutions is profound. Indeed, Prime Minister Rudd needs to take care lest he not only loses the next election but lines Australia up with the US for War Crime charges in the world foreshadowed by Dr Roberts. After all, 3rd world, even 2nd, world, countries have little say in defining war crimes.

The problem is ignorance. This nurtures the denial of change that challenges the most cherished of Australian certainties. This continues to legitimize a slavish adherence to stereotypes from the past. This only leaves our friends without the independent judgements and warnings that might assist at a time when the Anglo-American order of recent centuries is under challenge and, in the judgement of many, in imminent danger of a form of terminal collapse.
