Protectionism – back to the future?

By Carolyn Currie - posted Wednesday, 28 September 2011

Australia needs to examine the ease with which overseas interests can buy our land, water and minerals, but we cannot undertake reciprocal investments in such countries that are investing here – namely, China, India, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

Canada has enacted a Prime Agricultural Land Act as well as protection of mining from foreign interests.Surely Australia needs similar protection of its means of producing food and exports.

Protectionism is the holy grail of economic rationalists who believe in Michael Porter's theories of the competitive advantages of nations. However we do not live in a perfect world and other country's cheat. For instance Europe has long protected its farmers, even paying them to restore their environment.
