It is easier to plan with a stable population

By Eric Claus - posted Thursday, 12 August 2010

These are government sponsored studies that say explicitly that we are getting less sustainable every year. It is also important to note that these are problems that have developed and been reported over many years, with both Labor and Liberal governments in power. If we continue to have high immigration without seriously increasing taxation and spending it to correct these problems, we will continue to have infrastructure that lags behind what is needed, and the environment will continue to deteriorate.

We know the mining companies don’t think they should pay more tax, even though they are among the ones barracking hardest for increased immigration. It is difficult to think of any group that would be willing to pay more tax.

If the major political parties were as concerned about good planning as they were about getting elected, they would tell us that increased population requires increased infrastructure and increased infrastructure requires increased taxes. That is unlikely to happen. The current strategy for Labor and Liberal is to promise to be all things to all people and when actions don’t meet promises; change the Leader.

Nothing about that strategy or any strategy that the major parties propose, gives any hope that infrastructure planning and action will improve, or that we will start to become more sustainable. If these policies continue as they are, in a few years we will be remembering 2010 as the “Good Ole Days”.
