Dick Wharton is a civil engineer who graduated from Queensland University in 1963. A career public servant, he served with Queensland's Main Roads Department in Cloncurry, Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane. He has been involved in a wide range of road projects from Beef Roads in north-west Queensland to Freeways in Brisbane. He was Commissioner of Main Roads from 1988-1990 and Director General of Main Roads from 1996 -1998. He is currently in private practice as a consulting engineer. He chaired the national roads group, Austroads, on two occasions and was a director of the Australian Road Research Board. He is a Fellow and a past president of the Queensland Division of Engineers Australia and has served on National Congress for 3 years. He is 64, married to Julie and they have two children and two grandchildren.
