Talk it up 'Shrinkonomics'

By Dino Cesta - posted Tuesday, 17 February 2009

Tragic human events such as those we’ve recently witnessed with the Victorian bushfires, the floods in North Queensland and other painful events which have inflicted our nation in times past reveals the true essence of the Australian human spirit. It certainly brings out the best in many of us and, as we have seen in times such as these, in our politicians.

We just need this enduring human spirit to be translated to the economic cause. We may only have one shot in the locker. If it all goes asunder, it will have ramifications not only for the economic and social prosperity of this current generation, but also future generations of Australians.

A quote from Jesse Jackson conveys the role which our Prime Minister must play - “Leadership has a harder job to do than just choose sides. It must bring sides together.” At present, it appears the quote from August Bebel is more closer to the mark: “In time of war, the loudest patriots are the greatest profiteers.”

This economic crisis should not be an opportunity to politically profit but to bring together those of varied ideological persuasions to the table. Otherwise, by going it alone, and the economic stimulus package fails to live up to expectations, by the time of the next election, the Prime Minister risks being alienated - not by those in the opposition ranks or even within his own party, but more crucially by those he was meant to serve first and foremost - the Australian people.

“Shrinkonomics” is the gateway to restimulating economic prosperity. Many may charge me with political naivety, in being overly hopeful or even somewhat delusional.

If so, then I would be happy for you to refer a reputable shrink my way!
