The Australia cricket team needs a win in India - and so do our exporters

By Tim Harcourt - posted Monday, 1 March 2004

In conclusion, we are going to hear more about India, as well as China, in respect of Australia’s trading future. India will be a place to watch and to engage with for Australian exporters and entrepreneurs.

So let’s follow Australian business people follow Steve Waugh’s example to win at home and, more importantly, away. How you do on tour – in business and cricket – is a test of how good you really are.

And Steve, now that your wonderful cricketing career is over, can I suggest a new job? How about a special role as a business ambassador for Australia’s commercial interests in India? Former Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen did a great job in a similar role during the Rugby World Cup so we could give it a go at cricket too. For instance, as Ambassador Waugh, you could help the Australian wine industry in India. Just convince Sachin Tendulkar to stock Australian wine at his restaurant in Mumbai. With Tendulkar’s endorsement, I reckon a heck of a lot of Indian consumers will start becoming fans of Australian wine and it will work wonders for the industry back here – regardless of whether we win, lose or draw against the might of the Indian cricket team on their own soil.

And finally Steve thanks for a wonderful career from all of us Australian cricket tragics!
