Industry must go for green skills

By Heather Ridout - posted Wednesday, 15 October 2008

AI Group believes that a focus on the skills requirements associated with climate change should be considered as part of a wider review of Australia's management training arrangements.

Commonwealth, state and territory governments must also work more closely together to co-ordinate policy and funding initiatives across traditional lines of education and training. Working in partnership with industry, linkages between the training and higher education sectors should also be improved to facilitate greater communication between researchers, training stakeholders and industry.

In addition, as this is a new and emerging area of skills policy, a commitment to gathering data on specific skill needs is another important step that needs to be taken.

Finally, consideration should be given to establishing a green skills audit fund for companies working in industries designated as high environmental impact to determine their future skills needs. Albert Einstein once said that "knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy and dignified life". True enough, but in the battle against climate change it's a pretty good start.
