'OutFoxed' - Fox News is called to account

By Fiona Prior - posted Wednesday, 3 November 2004

You may actually find yourself watching more Fox News as a result of “OutFoxed” ... I think I would maintain that "Fox News" was always a blast to hate, but now I find that I'm more inspired to jeer than before and doing so has become much more satisfying … I love to hate the goat munching Bill O’Reilly. I love to hate the cowardly wussy Alan Colmes. I love to hate that **** Linda Vester on “Dayside”. I love to hate her beautiful puppy dog eyes as she casually spouts the most repulsive right-wing propaganda possible. My hatred for the people on "Fox News" gets me high as a kite; it’s better then (sic) coffee.

People have many reasons for watching Fox News. Ratings rarely tell the whole story. Impartiality is the language of pure math and not many people speak it.

I’m sure many of Fox News’ critics hold genuine concerns about the effect it’s having on the world, and other equally concerned souls are disturbed (and probably with better cause) that we live in a world where a product like Fox News can be a ratings winner. I also feel some detractors - particularly those generating the criticism coming from competing mainstream media sources - may object to its success for reasons that are more concerned with business than politics (if the two can ever be separated).

We can thank Fox News for being the stimulus that is allowing us to witness what may be the emergence of a genuinely alternative information network. OutFoxed was assisted in production by MoveOn.org. The Soros-supported Open Society Institute funds MoveOn.org and the Independent Media Institute, along with Alter.Net. Billionaire George Soros provides the financial support behind all of these and he could be an exciting new media auteur.

If offerings like Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and Greenwald’s OutFoxed are not just reactive one-offs, and if individuals like Michael Moore, as well as OutFoxed’s Al Franken, Walter Cronkite, Bernie Sanders, Bob McChesney and Jeff Cohen, can sustain and generate their passion - regardless of the political climate - we may be verging on very interesting times.
