Fetal tissue sting

By Peter Sellick - posted Friday, 24 July 2015

No, we should not be surprised by this, it occurs because we as a society have made the decision that the fetus is not a child, not a human being, it is mere tissue that we may dispose of as we see fit. Neither should we be surprised that we as a society have made this decision because we have come a long way from an understanding of life that would forbid it.

There was a phrase used by Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood of America in a video response to the sting that stuck me: "We support millions of people as they build their futures and pursue their goals." Here it is, the crux of secular humanism, human beings are human because they build futures and pursue goals. They are architects of their own lives that are ends in themselves.

In the face of this ideology a child in the womb may be treated as an obstacle if it comes at the wrong time. They are not a gift. Indeed there is no room for gifts in secular humanism, life must run on schedule, the arrival of children must be planned, otherwise they might get in the way of future building and goal pursuing.

In the ancient days it was only the pagans who performed child sacrifice or left unwanted children exposed on mountainsides. What has happened to us?
