The case for a new white paper and annual statements on Australian foreign policy and diplomacy

By Ordan Andreevski - posted Wednesday, 22 April 2015

Finally, there are better ways to promote the security and prosperity of Australia and the world through open source innovation and engagement models than 'closed circles'.

The pathway to improving Australia's model for foreign policy and diplomacy creation and effectiveness needs to start with a New White Paper on Foreign Policy and Trade followed by Annual Statements and debates in both houses of parliament and beyond.

Lowy Institute Director Dr. Fullilove has noted that Australia needs new ideas, new capabilities and more active engagement in foreign affairs based on Australia's recent leadership role at the UN Security Council and the G20. The Lowy Institute report from 2009 'Australia's Diplomatic Deficit: Reinvesting in our instruments of foreign policy' and the 2012 Report on the Inquiry into Australia's Overseas Representation can guide the Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in preparing a White Paper.

It will also work with Australia on building closer ties with the Republic of Macedonia.
