The ALP needs to split to save its core values.

By Klaas Woldring - posted Friday, 2 December 2011

Federal-state relations: This has been a growing headache right through the 1990s, and is crying out for major restructuring - but it wasn't even on Rudd's Australia 2020 Summit.

The Republic issue: Thisis right back on the back burner. A ridiculous situation! Again this was deliberately not on the agenda of the Australia 2020 Summit - although delegates clearly had it high on their own agenda. The conservatism of right wing of the ALP is indeed breathtaking.

The Media Inquiry: This has started without being encouraged to inquire into the grossly unbalanced media ownership in this country - the most important issue to be investigated and recommended on.

The Gay and Lesbian marriage issue: This may be fobbed off with a conscience vote at the ALP conference resulting in the maintenance of the status quo.

The ABC programs and staff representatives: This was promised during the 2007 election. Now four years later, Quentin Dempster is still "in exile". The dismantling of ABC infrastructure resulting the death of in-house production is progressing steadily. The ABC is being "outsourced" at high cost for ideological reasons. Who's ABC was it again?

Internal party reform: It  has been mostly the left of the Party who can see the writing very clearly on the wall - and is canvassing. "We will soon be a minority party", Kevin Rudd said recently – in Opposition one would have to add, Rescuing the ALP will have to be done without the right-wing of the party, by walking away from it and initiating the many reforms that are long overdue.
