Abatement action needed

By Micheil Brodie - posted Saturday, 15 July 2000

The longer we wait before taking action to limit greenhouse gases, the greater the requirement for limitation will be in a shorter period. Those who claim Australia will never have to respond because the international community will never agree had better start thinking again or they will end up in the same category as security advisors who said the Berlin Wall was forever.

The Kyoto agreement proves the international community can agree on these sorts of measures and that the science is accepted. The problem isn’t proved but the need to avert the possibility of a runaway greenhouse effect is.

It is time that the Australian federal government made some decisions and got on with the job of bringing the Australian community along rather than having more inquiries and more discussion.

An emissions trading system now could create economic advantage for Australian business and start to reduce the future impact of greenhouse abatement on households in Australia.
